How About a Colorado Vacation Rental for a Summer Vacation?
How about a Colorado vacation rental for a summer vacation? Summer is a wonderful time to check out the splendor of the Colorado Rockies. There is a temperature range to please everyone in the family!
Colorado is home to several National Parks to visit and enjoy. One of our favorites is the Great Sand Dunes National Park. This park is lightly visited, so you will not be inundated by other vacationers. The drive to get to this park is spectacular.
You can see the dunes from a good distance away; they are the tallest dunes in North America. They will be nestled at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range. Depending upon what time of year you visit you may see snow on Mount Blanca, one of Colorado’s “fourteeners”.
If you have kids along for the vacation, be sure to pack the snow boards or plastic sleds for a ride down the dunes. Be forewarned, you will tire out climbing the dunes long before the kids do. Cardboard will not slid on the sand, you must have plastic to make this work.
Be sure to throw in some clothes that you don’t mind getting wet in. Medano Creek flows at the bottom of the dunes at certain times of the year. Most of the water comes from the snow pack melt. So the water is chilly and its depth depends upon the snow pack melt. It feels great on a hot summer day, although we have gone only to find a small trickle.
There are sand wheelchairs available for rent at the visitor’s center. There are picnic facilities available at the parking lot for the dunes. There are more primitive areas available by tour or if you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle. We usually can spend a whole afternoon playing on the dunes without venturing much beyond that area.
It does get hot out on the sand. Be sure to pack plenty of water and juices on your day trip from your vacation rental. Plan on bringing a picnic lunch as the dunes are isolated. A blanket to sit on or a lawn chair is nice. There is some shade available but sunscreen is a must as is a hat.
As you leave the park, you might want to consider a trip to Zapata Falls. This is on Mount Blanca and the road is well marked. The road is gravel but fairly well maintained. It is about 3 miles to the trailhead and then it is another ½ mile walk to the falls. At that altitude however, the walk feels like it is a lot farther. There are bathroom facilities at the parking lot.
This is a great day trip from almost any vacation rental on the Front Range or the foot hills of Colorado. It is a must do if you are staying around the Colorado Springs area. Another fun National Park is Bent’s Old Fort. This is a completely different park from the cooler climes of the Great Sand Dunes.
River rafting and hiking opportunities abound in Colorado. A vacation rental is a perfect staging area for any activity you can think of here. After a fun day of hiking and exploring, it is nice to come back to your home away from home. You can cook a little supper without having to shower and clean the kids up before taking them back out again to find food.
What a nice relaxing end to a great day of vacationing fun and memory making. Please don’t tell too many people about my favorite National Park, if everyone comes to see for themselves that will make it too crowded. Have fun, and when the kids think you are crazy for packing the plastic sled for a Colorado summer vacation, just give them a smile.
